Deep tissue massage is not dissimilar to what most people perceive as a regular massage. It is a procedure designed to release tension, lengthen tissue, soften muscles and help release holding patterns, which are often holding people back in terms of performance or day-to-day living.

Sports massage is a deep tissue massage, which is especially effective in the treatment of minor soft tissue injuries i.e. muscle and tendon damage to general muscular aches and pains. These are the most common (and neglected) of all injuries.

It is suitable not only for people involved in sports but anyone with general muscular stiffness or pain or indeed, anyone in need of a deep massage to relax and promote well-being.

Overall, you should feel calm and relaxed after treatment. Tight / problem areas may feel slightly sore for a day or two. If you have a ‘problem’ area, it can be ‘uncomfortable’ during deep work. What most describe as a ‘good pain’. Yet I will work as deeply as you, the client, are comfortable with.

Deep massage stimulates the local blood supply, bringing in new blood and nutrients to help speed up repair and healing. It also assists in the removal of toxins and waste products which arise in tissues from the production of energy, tissue damage and inflammation.

This is why it is recommended to drink water after your massage treatment, to help the body flush out any accumulated ‘waste materials’ in the muscles which have been released during the massage. Also, a deep massage can be de-hydrating to muscles, so in a way, it’s a bit like doing an exercise workout. Water will help prevent unnecessary soreness. Keeping muscles/ tendons etc. hydrated helps keep tissue supple and healthy.
